12 Sep Popular festival in Vilafranca del Penedès
Starting at the end of June and lasting until the end of September we have plenty of festes majors (town festivals) celebrated all around Catalonia’s towns and cities. If you come to visit around this period, I’d recommend checking dates for the festa majors. If you are lucky, you can go to the one in Vilafranca del Penedès, which we visited this year.
Besides enjoying traditional colorful and cheerful dances, popular folksongs, gegants i capgrossos (giants and big-heads), correfocs (devils dancing to the sound of drums and running with noisy fireworks)… you’ll be veeeeeery happy to see the main event: colles castelleres (groups of people that build human towers). Woooooow!!!!!!!!! No wonder it is part of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity declared by UNESCO.
Watching this group of different ages and backgrounds working together with extreme physical strength and skill, focusing to hold the weight, staying in balance, and climbing up high to assemble a spectaularly tall human tower it is very impressive and exciting thing to see.
After watching that you’ll need to fill your stomach with some food! J We went to a restaurant called La Fabrica, which is a fusion of Japanese and Mediterranean food. We ordered Asian salad with tofu and avocado, codfish and salmon carpaccio, codfish with roasted butternut squash and hummus, and roasted lamb with wild rice and fried eggplants. My favorite was the Carpaccio. They put a nice herb dressing on top that made it very refreshing and flavourful.
It was a beautiful day in Vilafranca! Hope we make it next year!
