Costa Brava Farewell

After spending 5 days in Costa Brava visiting medieval towns, fish towns, bathing in beaches and coves, taking lots of photos of and with Aina, boarding a pirate sailing boat, and treating ourselves with great seafood, we wanted to say goodbye by eating a nice rice dish in Llofriu, in the new part of the town.

We went to eat at a place called M’hi paro. We ate arròs negre amb sèpia (black rice with squid), arròs amb conill (rice with rabbit), nero fish wih allioli negat (broken allioli) and sardine and mussel escabetxats.

Everything was very good! But I have to say that the black rice with squid was my favorite. In this region of Catalonia, which is called l’ Empordà, they make the dish arròs negre without using the ink from the squid. They cook the onion until it gets caramelized and dark, and that then turns the rice black. That requires a long time cooking and lots of patience because you have to constantly add water to the onion and keep stirring so it doesn’t get burnt. Believe me, it is worth it!

Nana and Baba, as Aina calls her grandparents, we’ll miss you! Thanks for coming all the way from New York to spend time with us! It’s been a treat to travel with you and we hope to do it again soon!
